Hip-hop stars and now proud parents, Beyonce and Jay-Z welcomed their first daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, to the world last Saturday. The unique moniker follows a line of other increasingly popular celebrity baby names this year.

For Beyonce and Jay-Z, choosing their daughter’s name was a long and arduous process. “I originally wanted to name her “Yellow Five’ but it occurred to me that’s an ingredient in M&M’s,” said Beyonce. “I didn’t want to steal a name from a chocolate candy.”

Husband Jay-Z had his hesitations as well. “I was looking around my room and I thought, “Desk.’ That’s a nice name, no? Then Beyonce reminded me, that’s totally a boy’s name. How silly of me!” said the Grammy Award-winning musician and entrepreneur.

While Blue Ivy Carter may seem like an unusual name, it hardly racks up against some other famous celebrity baby names, including “Apple,’ daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow, “Pilot Inspektor,’ son of actor Jason Lee, and “Moon Unit,’ son of rock and jazz guitarist Frank Zappa.

Michael Jackson’s son, Blanket, declined to comment for this story.

A recent survey conducted by Gallup Poll found a multitude of new names on the rise this year. Below is a list of what is projected to be the top celebrity baby names of 2012:
