Dear Girl,

First of all, let me say that I’m really glad to see you out here supporting our football team in their quest to become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2004. It’s pretty sad that a huge chunk of our student section is still empty, especially when we’re 6-3.
That being said, please just…remain silent. Please.
Because here’s the thing: When the opposing team has the ball, the object of the game is for our defense to try and get to the guy carrying the ball and tackle him, thus preventing him from getting closer to the end zone. This is football, as understood by most people in our fair Republic.
Every player on the field also understands this. So your shrieking “GET HIM! GET HIM! GET HIM!” at ear-bleeding levels is not helping anyone. They’re at least 100 yards away from you and definitely can’t hear you. Also, it’s generally understood that the defense is supposed to “get” the guy carrying the ball. So really the only thing you’re accomplishing is ensuring that there will be a dull ringing in my head for the next week and a half.
By that same coin, when our offense has the ball? We don’t want anyone to “get” him. We want him to run really far and possibly score a touchdown. So thus, yelling that when we’re on offense makes you sound like a tremendous doofus.
Again, I’m sure the football team appreciates your support, and so do I. But please, in the future, support silently. Please. If only so that I’m not deaf by the time I’m 21.
