Last Thursday, a brand new bar had its grand opening on
Marshall Street. DJ’s recently joined Chuck’s, Faegan’s, Lucy’s, and Harry’s to
become the latest installment in Syracuse University campus bars, which evidently
are all required by law to have an apostrophe and an “s” at the end of the
name.

When Maggie’s was shut down in 2009 for excessive underage
drinking citations, SU students wondered what would become of the prime
Marshall Street location. It used to be a safe haven for freshmen with fake IDs
that don’t scan or have holograms, but since it lost its liquor license, it was
destined to become a sandwich shop, an SU apparel store, or another bar ““ pretty
much the only three possibilities for an empty lot on Marshall Street. This
semester, it became DJ’s, giving students a fifth bar option on campus.

However, bars on Marshall occasionally suffer from customer
stereotyping, sort of similar to the way jocks and nerds claim separate tables
in high school cafeterias. Now, the staff at DJ’s is eagerly waiting to find
out what kind of crowd their bar will bring. Will it be the new go-to spot for
Long Island kids? Hipsters? Meatheads? Townies? Or maybe transfer students? As
of now, it’s an eclectic mix of students just getting a feel for the place and hopefully
it will find its niche in the young SU community. If not, it will probably just
die out and turn into a Chipotle.
